Historic Black Churches

Brochure CoverIn 2001, the Cane River National Heritage Area Commission published a 32-page brochure containing historical and directory information on African American churches in the Cane River region. The brochure contains a historical overview, photographs by Natchitoches resident Sonny Carter, historical photographs, a map, and a directory.

The brochure provides a framework with which to understand the history, architecture, and cultural significance of African American churches in the region. The historical overview contains information on local churches, as well as descriptions of religious traditions. Some of the most important rituals and rites, such as shape-note singing, long-meter singing, and baptisms in the Cane River, are still practiced by congregations today.

The project was supported in part by a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.
